As most of you probably know, Loki is the next version (0.4) of the beautiful and minimalistic elementary OS. At the moment it is still under active development and there’s no testing ISO available yet. However there are still some videos popped up over the internet about Loki so you may wonder how did they install it already.

Well, Loki is going to be based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS released in next month and the final beta of it is out since yesterday. There’s also an elementary daily PPA which you can add to Ubuntu and install elementary packages from it. First and foremost please note that Loki is under heavy development at the moment, it might be unstable, it might even break your system so don’t use it on a production environment. At this point, Ubuntu is also in a beta stage so it’s really not recommended to install Loki on it now unless you want to test it for some reason.

How to install elementary OS 0.4 Loki?

  1. Download Ubuntu 16.04 Beta 2 and install it on your system.
  2. Once installed, add elementary daily PPA by typing the following in Terminal:
    sudo apt-add-repository ppa:elementary-os/daily
  3. Update the system and install elementary-desktop package:
    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install elementary-desktop

Once elementary desktop is installed you have to select Pantheon desktop environment on the login screen:

After logging in you’ll see the yet unstable elementary OS Loki. You may notice that there are some duplicated apps, it is because Ubuntu apps and elementary applications are also present.
